Stadium Announcement Response

Question:

What was your initial reaction to the announcement? Do you support locating the proposed stadium in Ward 2? What do you see as the biggest opportunities and concerns this project presents for Ward 2 residents and the city as a whole?

Answer:

I believe sports builds community.  An important part of my mission as councillor is to create a sense of community in our downtown, and a new stadium is exactly the type of investment our growing city needs, so I'm excited about it.  The Old Dunlop Arena was a tremendous asset when it was located near the downtown core, this new stadium will be even better.

The biggest opportunity is the positive impact it will have beyond sports. A stadium will bring more people into the downtown throughout the year, increasing community involvement, attracting private investment, and supporting local businesses. This Increased activity will bring more eyes on the street, which will contribute to a safer downtown as well.

At the same time, it’s important to acknowledge the concerns of longevity and nearby residents. I’m interested in learning whether there will be a roof or dome addition in order to continue use during the Winter months and to protect our investment. Parking, traffic congestion, and noise must be carefully planned for from the outset. If we invest in the right transportation, parking strategies, and neighbourhood protections, I believe we can maximize the benefits of this project while minimizing its negative impact on those who live in the area surrounding the new Stadium.
